Complications Caused By Diabetes - Did you know that diabetes is the source of all ills? Yes, diabetes is a disease that can affect many organs in your body.

High blood sugar levels in diabetics can lead to many complications of diabetes. Some organs can be affected by diabetes are the heart, kidneys, eyes, blood vessels, and nervous system.

But, what are the relation between blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and cholesterol?

High blood sugar, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol levels, all three being 'subject matter' that can cause various diseases.

High blood sugar levels can damage blood vessels and increase the accumulation of fat in the blood vessel wall. This fat deposition can affect blood flow, and can also increase the risk of clogging and hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis).

This atherosclerosis then can cause high blood pressure.

Besides causing high blood pressure, diabetes also can affect cholesterol levels in the body. Diabetes tends to raise levels of bad cholesterol and lowers good cholesterol.

Many diabetic patients also followed by complications in other vital organs. The reason is because diabetes can affect blood vessels and nerves that will have an impact on all parts of the body.

To prevent it, apply a healthy diet, regular exercise, quit smoking and avoid consuming alcoholic beverages. And, the following are types of complications that can happen:

1. Heart Disease
Diabetes can cause you to have high blood pressure and may also be associated with high cholesterol levels.

High blood sugar, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol can cause blockages in blood vessels. So that diabetic patients are more at risk for heart attack and stroke. Heart disease is the most common cause of death in people with diabetes.

2. Kidney Disease
Besides heart, the kidneys also become an important organ that could have problems due to diabetes. The cause is the same, namely because of high blood sugar, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol levels.

Kidney disease may occur due to damage of small blood vessels in the kidneys that cause kidney function becomes less efficient, it can even lead to kidney failure. Diabetic nephropathy is a term describing kidney disease caused by diabetes.

3. Eye Problems
One of eye problems are often experienced by diabetic patients is diabetic retinopathy. This disease is caused by blood vessels in the back of the eye (retina) that have experienced swelling and rupture. This can cause problems with vision, and can even cause blindness.

Again, high blood sugar, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol trigger diabetic retinopathy, as well as cause other complications.

4. The Nerve Damage
Diabetes can cause nerve damage throughout the body, or commonly known as diabetic neuropathy. The effects of diabetes on the nerves can be a serious problem because the nerve is in all our body functions, such as on the feet and hands, the digestive system, until the sex and reproductive organs.
If the patient has nerve damage (neuropathy), will typically experience:

  • Numbness or tingling in hands or feet
  • The lack of passion on the penis or clitoris
  • Excessive sweating
  • Awareness of empty stomach to be delayed

5. Digestive problems
Diabetes can affect digestion in many ways. When diabetes has caused nerve damage in the digestive system, the patient may experience nausea, constipation, or diarrhea.

6. Problems in the Feet
Diabetes can also cause nerve damage in the feet, foot infections, and problems of blood flow to the legs. The nerve damage in the legs is called peripheral neuropathy.

When patients have it, he will feel pain, tingling, and numbness in the legs. Be careful if the legs are numb because the patient could have suffered foot injuries without realizing.

The wound in the foot can cause the patient to experience a serious infection that can spread to other parts of the body, even the feet can be amputated just because of this issue. If you have diabetes, began to regularly check your feet, do not underestimate it.

7. Teeth Problems
Diabetes can also cause problems with teeth and gums, such as gingivitis and periodontitis. If you experience this problem, usually gums will redden, swell and bleed easily.
